Al Wajh Airport Reopens After Major Upgrade, Boosting Connectivity in Saudi Arabia’s Northwest

Al Wajh International Airport has officially reopened following a major modernization project that significantly expands its capacity and strengthens connectivity across Saudi Arabia’s northwestern region.

The redevelopment, completed by Red Sea Global (RSG), marks a major milestone for regional transportation infrastructure and supports the Kingdom’s broader tourism and economic development ambitions. The upgraded airport has resumed operations and is now welcoming domestic flights, with international services expected to follow in the future.

One of the most significant improvements is the airport’s expanded passenger capacity. The facility can now handle up to 500,000 passengers annually, a fivefold increase from its previous capacity of 100,000 travelers per year. The new terminal also features four gates and can process up to 330 arriving and departing passengers per hour during peak periods.

The modernization allows Al Wajh Airport to accommodate larger commercial aircraft, including the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 families. The airport is also equipped to support seaplane and helicopter operations, providing greater flexibility for future transportation needs across the region.

Commercial operations have already resumed, with Saudia currently operating three weekly flights from Riyadh and two weekly flights from Jeddah. Airport officials say discussions are ongoing with airline partners and regulatory authorities to establish additional domestic and international routes as passenger demand grows.

The renovated terminal offers a range of enhanced passenger amenities, including premium lounges, coffee shops, retail outlets, banking services, car rental facilities, and expanded parking areas. Its architectural design draws inspiration from the historic coastal city of Al Wajh and the distinctive character of the Tabuk coastline, blending modern functionality with local heritage.

The airport is expected to play a key role in supporting tourism growth in northwestern Saudi Arabia, particularly as a gateway to the upcoming AMAALA luxury wellness destination on the Red Sea coast. Located approximately 45 minutes away by road, AMAALA is set to become one of the Kingdom’s flagship tourism developments, featuring world-class resorts, wellness experiences, and marine tourism attractions.

According to Red Sea Global, the airport upgrade represents the company’s first completed infrastructure project outside its tourism portfolio. The development is expected to stimulate economic activity, create new opportunities for local communities, and improve accessibility throughout the Tabuk region. As Saudi Arabia continues to invest heavily in aviation and tourism under Vision 2030, the reopening of Al Wajh International Airport marks another important step in transforming the Kingdom’s transportation network and enhancing its appeal as a global travel destination.
