Restoration of Al-Fath Mosque Begins in Al-Jumum Under Prince Mohammed bin Salman Project

Saudi authorities have begun restoration work on Al-Fath Mosque in the Al-Jumum governorate of the Makkah Region. This effort is part of the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Project for the Development of Historical Mosques, an initiative to renovate and preserve historic Islamic sites across the Kingdom.

Al-Fath Mosque is a historic place of worship located about 260 metres from the road linking Makkah and Madinah. The site has long religious significance, as it is believed that Prophet Muhammad prayed there during the Conquest of Makkah.

The restoration work at Al-Fath Mosque is part of the second phase of the project. This phase aims to rebuild, expand and improve the mosque while preserving its cultural and religious value. The work includes increasing the mosque’s built area from 455.77 square metres to 553.5 square metres and increasing its capacity from 218 worshippers to 333 worshippers once development is complete.

According to official announcements, the renovation will reflect the traditional architectural style of the western region of Saudi Arabia. Materials and design elements will be chosen to respect local heritage while ensuring the site remains functional for worship and community activities.

Al-Fath Mosque is one of many mosques included in the broader project. Saudi officials have stated that 60 out of the 130 targeted mosques have been worked on so far under the second phase. These mosques are spread across the country and include sites of historical and cultural meaning.

The Prince Mohammed bin Salman Project for the Development of Historical Mosques was launched in 2018. It is a public initiative under Saudi Vision 2030 and is jointly overseen by government bodies to restore and protect historic mosques that have fallen into neglect. The aim is to maintain these sites for future generations, support their traditional roles, and increase their value as community landmarks.

Work at Al-Fath Mosque is ongoing, with efforts focused on delivering a restored site that honours its history while serving current needs.
