Saudi Coffee Chain Ratio Launches Inclusive Café in Al Khobar

Saudi coffee chain Ratio has opened a unique new café in Al Khobar that is placing inclusion and community engagement at the heart of its operations. The new branch, known as Ratio Efaa, is staffed primarily by people with Down syndrome and aims to create meaningful employment opportunities while providing a welcoming space for individuals with disabilities and their families.

The initiative was launched in partnership with Efaa Medical Center and marks the first Ratio branch dedicated to integrating people with disabilities into the workforce through a mainstream hospitality environment. The café represents a significant step forward for inclusive employment in Saudi Arabia and reflects the Kingdom’s broader efforts to create more accessible and equitable opportunities across different sectors.

Ratio has grown into one of Saudi Arabia’s leading homegrown coffee brands, operating more than 130 branches across the Kingdom. With the launch of Ratio Efaa, the company is extending its role beyond coffee retail by creating a model that combines business, social impact, and community participation. According to company representatives, the concept was developed through partnerships with charities and organizations that support people with disabilities.

Before joining the Al Khobar café, employees underwent several months of training across different Ratio branches. The program included customer service, communication skills, order handling, cashier operations, and coffee preparation techniques. Employees were then assigned roles that matched their individual strengths and abilities, ensuring they could perform confidently in a professional environment.

Approximately 70 percent of the café’s workforce consists of people with Down syndrome, while the remaining team members provide operational support and assistance when needed. The branch has also introduced practical solutions designed to make daily operations more accessible. One example is a color-coded ordering system that replaces traditional order numbers with colored cubes, making it easier for employees to identify and deliver customer orders.

Beyond employment, Ratio Efaa has been designed as a community hub where people living with disabilities and their families can gather, socialize, and enjoy a comfortable environment. A portion of the café’s revenue is also directed toward supporting Efaa Medical Center, strengthening the social impact of the initiative.

The project has received positive attention across Saudi Arabia for demonstrating how businesses can contribute to greater inclusion while maintaining a high-quality customer experience. Encouraged by the response, Ratio has announced plans to expand the concept to additional cities, including Riyadh and Jeddah, later this year.

As Saudi Arabia’s café culture continues to grow, Ratio Efaa stands out as a powerful example of how hospitality businesses can create opportunities, foster acceptance, and build stronger connections within the community. Through a simple cup of coffee, the Al Khobar café is helping create a more inclusive future for all.
