THE MAKING OF A SUSTAINABLE MUSIC INDUSTRY: A Conversation with Ramadan Alharatani, CEO of MDLBEAST

1. MDLBEAST has transitioned from a singular festival into a full creative ecosystem. How do you define its core purpose today, and what legacy do you want it to leave in Saudi culture by 2030?

MDLBEAST has grown from a single festival into a full creative ecosystem. Today, its core purpose is to build the infrastructure and foundations needed for a thriving music and entertainment industry in Saudi Arabia. Our focus is on creating a sustainable, human-centric ecosystem where music, creativity, and culture can be carried on by generations to come.

By 2030, MDLBEAST aims to have created a complete blueprint for live entertainment, rooted in Saudi Arabia but applicable to other markets, one that can be exported and advised on based on our journey and experience.

By then, we see MDLBEAST as having consolidated its role as an instrumental force in building the Kingdom’s music industry, helping establish sustainable creative careers, empowering talent, and embedding Saudi Arabia into the global touring circuit.

We aim at having it widely recognized not only for its festivals and experiences, ranked among the leading events in the world, but also as a trusted partner to events’ white-label clients and a key connector between Saudi Arabia and the global music scene.

2. How do you balance global production standards with a distinctly Saudi creative identity in Open-air festivals and MDLBEAST’s artist roster?

We treat global production standards as our baseline, including safety, security, sound, staging and technical excellence. They all must meet the highest international benchmarks. What we do in order to ensure our Saudi identity is always present is how we create the narrative around that infrastructure. A good example of this is Soundstorm 2025, where we introduced new stages that are built and based on Saudi cultural references.

One standout was the “6AG” stage, an immersive stage inspired by the atmosphere of a traditional Saudi desert tent and exclusive to Saudi and regional talents, balancing the roster for talents and giving local artists a platform to shine along with global superstars.

Also, the introduction of A Thousand and One Festival in 2025, bringing a playful, contemporary interpretation of Arabic folk tales, merging storytelling with top-notch sound, visuals and production.

3. With initiatives like women-only spaces and inclusive festival design, how do you see MDLBEAST evolving in its role as a community-centric platform?

We do not see inclusion as an add-on. For us, it is a responsibility and a core part of how we design every experience. Our approach has always been shaped by listening closely to our community and responding to what people genuinely need in order to feel comfortable, safe, and empowered.

Women are a key part of our audience and our creative ecosystem, which is why initiatives like the HER Zones were developed. From women-only entrances and viewing areas to clearly marked pathways, lounges, and closer drop-off points, every detail is designed to make female attendees feel welcome and supported.

For many, this may be their first live music experience, so creating an environment that feels accessible, respectful, and inclusive is essential.

As MDLBEAST evolves, our role as a community-centric platform will continue to deepen. We are focused on building spaces where people feel seen and represented, and where women, artists, and fans can actively participate in shaping local music culture.

In the long term, our goal is to ensure that our platforms remain welcoming, empowering, and socially meaningful, setting a standard for inclusive live entertainment in the region and beyond.

4. Entertainment is becoming a key industry under Vision 2030. What measurable economic shifts, jobs, tourism, and SMEs have you seen since MDLBEAST scaled?

We have seen tangible economic layers of impact across multiple sectors. MDLBEAST has directly and indirectly created thousands of job opportunities, while festival periods have significantly boosted the tourism and hospitality sectors.

Perhaps the most important thing is that we’re witnessing the emergence of entirely new career paths in music, production, and event management, opportunities that didn’t exist at this scale before.

And this is how I believe an industry should take a route. An example of that is that over 15,000 people worked on-site at Soundstorm Festival in 2025, a scale of employment and collaboration that we haven’t seen before in the region.

5. Rapid scaling often brings unforeseen challenges. What has been the toughest strategic decision you’ve made, and how did it alter your leadership approach?

Rapid scaling has been exciting, but it also comes with complexity. One of the toughest strategic decisions was finding the right balance between expanding our events and venues and staying true to MDLBEAST’s core identity.

From the start, it was important that what we build remains authentic, rooted in Saudi culture, and created by Saudis for Saudis first and foremost. That phase reinforced the importance of clarity and intentionality as we grow.

It pushed us to be more selective, more thoughtful about partnerships, and more disciplined in how we scale, ensuring that growth strengthens rather than compromises who we are. Today, my leadership focus is on alignment, building strong teams, empowering local talent, and making sure every decision supports our long-term vision.

This approach has allowed MDLBEAST to scale responsibly, while positioning it as a credible platform for partners and industry leaders to engage with Saudi Arabia’s rapidly evolving music and entertainment landscape.

6. Saudi Arabia is emerging as an entertainment hub. What role do you see MDLBEAST playing globally, in touring circuits, artist collaborations, or cross-industry partnerships over the next decade?

Saudi Arabia is rapidly establishing itself as an influential force in global entertainment, from music festivals to sports, and MDLBEAST’s role is to be an active contributor to that momentum.

Over the next decade, we see ourselves deeply embedded in global touring circuits, artist collaborations, and cross-industry partnerships that position Saudi Arabia as a natural destination for world-class live experiences. MDLBEAST is already part of global conversations around artist development, festival innovation, and creative collaboration. The next phase is about scale and continuity, ensuring that Saudi artists are able to access international platforms, while global artists, producers, and creative partners see the Kingdom as a place to create, perform, and invest in long-term relationships.

Ultimately, our ambition is for MDLBEAST to play a meaningful role in shaping the future of live entertainment, not just by hosting events, but by contributing ideas, infrastructure, and creative leadership that resonate globally, while remaining grounded in the cultural identity of Saudi Arabia.

7. Festivals are momentary experiences, but institutions shape ecosystems. MDLBEAST has expanded into year-round platforms, venues, and talent pipelines beyond Soundstorm. How are you institutionalizing music culture in Saudi Arabia so it outlives trends and becomes a sustainable industry backbone?

Soundstorm played an important role in opening the door and shifting perceptions, but it has always been only one part of a much broader vision. From the beginning, our focus has been on building continuity, not just moments. That is why MDLBEAST has expanded into year-round platforms, dedicated venues, and structured talent pipelines that support the music ecosystem beyond any single festival.

Institutionalizing music culture means investing in the foundations of the industry. We are investing in people, in talent development, in professional standards, and in knowledge-sharing across the sector. This includes creating opportunities for artists, training the next generation of industry professionals, and building systems that allow creativity to thrive consistently, not seasonally.

Through this approach, MDLBEAST is helping ensure that music culture in Saudi Arabia outlives trends and evolves into a self-sustaining industry backbone, one that supports artists, develops careers, and keeps audiences meaningfully engaged for the long term.
