Umrah Crowds Reach Record Levels During Ramadan 2026

Umrah crowds in Saudi Arabia are reaching record levels during Ramadan 2026, with millions of pilgrims arriving in Makkah and Madinah as the holy month begins.

Recent data shows a significant surge in Umrah activity even before Ramadan. More than 14.8 million Umrah performances were recorded in the month of Rajab alone, highlighting the growing number of pilgrims travelling to the Kingdom.

This momentum has continued into Ramadan, traditionally the busiest period for Umrah. Authorities and travel operators expect millions of pilgrims to gather in Makkah during the month, with overall numbers projected to exceed previous years. In 2024, around 30 million pilgrims performed Umrah during Ramadan, showing the scale of demand during this time.

The increase in numbers is driven by several factors, including improved digital services, easier visa processes, and expanded infrastructure around the holy sites. Saudi Arabia has introduced streamlined systems that allow pilgrims to plan and complete their journey more efficiently.

Hotels in Makkah and Madinah are seeing high occupancy rates, and transport services are operating at near full capacity. Authorities have also intensified preparations in key areas around the Grand Mosque to manage the growing crowds and ensure smooth movement for pilgrims.

The rise in Umrah numbers reflects Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to expand religious tourism under Vision 2030. The Kingdom has already exceeded its earlier targets, with international Umrah arrivals increasing significantly in recent years.

For many pilgrims, performing Umrah during Ramadan holds special spiritual significance, which continues to drive demand year after year. Even with the large crowds, ongoing improvements in infrastructure and services are helping manage the experience more effectively.

As Ramadan continues, Makkah remains one of the most visited places in the world, with record-breaking numbers of pilgrims coming together for a shared spiritual journey.
