Riyadh Unveils New Self-Driving Car Route Connecting Major Malls

Saudi Arabia has taken another step toward smart mobility with the launch of a new self-driving car route in Riyadh. The route connects two of the city’s busiest destinations, Hayat Mall and Riyadh Gallery, offering passengers a new way to travel using autonomous vehicles.

The initiative was introduced by the Transport General Authority as part of the Kingdom’s efforts to expand modern transport solutions under Vision 2030. The service is designed to provide a safe and smooth passenger experience while reducing reliance on traditional driving.

The self-driving vehicles operate daily under strict regulatory and technical supervision. They are equipped with advanced systems, including sensors, cameras, and intelligent software that can monitor road conditions and respond to traffic in real time.

This launch builds on earlier trial phases that showed strong results. During testing, the vehicles completed more than 1,700 trips, carried over 3,000 passengers, and covered more than 30,000 kilometres. These results helped confirm the readiness of the technology for wider use in the city.

The new route is part of a larger plan to expand autonomous transport across Saudi Arabia. Authorities have indicated that more routes are expected in the future as the country continues to invest in smart and sustainable mobility solutions.

Riyadh is already home to one of the world’s largest driverless metro systems, and the addition of self-driving cars highlights the city’s growing focus on innovation in transport.

With this latest step, Saudi Arabia continues to move closer to a future where technology plays a key role in everyday travel, making transport safer, more efficient, and more connected.
