Saudi Arabia is moving forward with plans to develop a major railway project that will connect Dammam on the Arabian Gulf to Jeddah on the Red Sea, covering a distance of around 1,500 kilometers. The project is part of the Kingdom’s broader rail expansion strategy under Vision 2030 and is often referred to as the Landbridge project. It aims to link the eastern and western coasts through Riyadh, creating a continuous rail corridor across the country.
The train service has not started yet, as the project is still in the planning and early development phase. Design work and infrastructure planning are currently underway, with initial stages expected to focus on freight before expanding to passenger services.
Once completed, the railway is expected to significantly reduce travel time across the Kingdom. Journeys that currently take several hours by road could be shortened to just a few hours by train, improving connectivity between major cities and economic centers.
The rail corridor will also play an important role in logistics by linking ports on both coasts and supporting trade across Saudi Arabia. It is designed to connect industrial zones, urban centers, and key transport hubs, strengthening the country’s position as a regional logistics hub.
Saudi Arabia has been investing heavily in railway infrastructure in recent years, including high-speed passenger lines and freight networks. The Landbridge project stands out as one of the most ambitious, with the potential to reshape how people and goods move across the country in the years ahead.
