
Riyadh: Emerging filmmakers from around the world now have the opportunity to showcase their talent as submissions officially open for the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards 2027. Free to enter, the global competition, established by Creo in partnership with Sony, returns for its fifth edition with a new Immersive category presented by Meta, celebrating innovative storytelling through 3D, 180° and 360° filmmaking.
Designed to discover and support the next generation of filmmakers, the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards offer more than just international recognition. Shortlisted participants will be flown to Los Angeles for an exclusive four-day industry program at the iconic Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City from June 7 to 10, 2027, culminating in the awards ceremony on June 10.
During the program, filmmakers will take part in masterclasses, workshops and networking sessions led by Sony Pictures executives and industry professionals. The experience covers key aspects of filmmaking, including production, film acquisition, media relations, animation, sound design and the latest filmmaking technologies, providing participants with valuable insight into Hollywood and opportunities to connect with leading industry figures.
Six Competition Categories
The 2027 edition features six categories catering to different filmmaking styles and experience levels:
- Fiction: Narrative short films between 5 and 20 minutes.
- Non-Fiction: Documentary and factual films between 5 and 20 minutes.
- Immersive (New): Short films using immersive formats such as 3D, 180° or 360° video, running between 5 and 20 minutes.
- Animation: Animated films between 2 and 20 minutes using any animation technique.
- Student: Open to students enrolled in diploma or degree-level film courses worldwide.
- Future Format: Vertical (9:16) films between 2 and 5 minutes created in response to this year’s technical brief.
Winners across the Fiction, Non-Fiction, Animation and Student categories will receive Sony Digital Imaging equipment, a Meta VR device, and a USD 5,000 cash prize. The new Immersive category winner will receive a Meta VR device and USD 5,000, while the Future Format winner will receive Sony Digital Imaging equipment, USD 2,500, and an invitation to the Los Angeles workshop program.

Sustainability Prize Returns
The Sustainability Prize also returns this year, recognising a short film that creatively explores themes including environmental responsibility, accessibility, diversity, equality and inclusion. The winner will receive USD 5,000, Sony Digital Imaging equipment, and promotional support through the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards platforms.
Entry Deadline
Submissions for the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards 2027 are open until December 15, 2026, at 7:00 AM CST. The Fiction, Non-Fiction, Immersive, Animation and Student category winners will be announced during the awards ceremony in Los Angeles on June 10, 2027, while the Future Format winner and commended filmmakers will be revealed in April 2027.
