Riyadh’s Black Gold Museum Is Now Open to the Public

Saudi Arabia has officially opened a new cultural landmark in Riyadh with the launch of the Black Gold Museum, offering a fresh way to explore the story of oil through art and human experience.

The museum was inaugurated on April 7, 2026, at the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Centre, marking a major addition to the Kingdom’s growing cultural scene.

Unlike traditional energy or science museums, the Black Gold Museum takes a more creative approach. It presents the history of oil, often called “black gold,” through contemporary art, installations, and storytelling that explore how oil has shaped societies, economies, and everyday life.

The museum features a permanent collection of more than 350 artworks created by over 170 artists from more than 30 countries. These include large-scale installations, photography, and archival materials that bring together global perspectives on energy and culture.

Visitors can explore four main sections: Encounter, Dreams, Doubts, and Visions. Each section focuses on a different stage of oil’s journey, from its discovery and industrial impact to its role in shaping the future.

Housed inside KAPSARC’s iconic building, designed by renowned architect Zaha Hadid, the museum blends architecture, art, and storytelling into one immersive experience.

The opening of the Black Gold Museum reflects Saudi Arabia’s continued investment in arts and culture under Vision 2030. By presenting oil through a human and artistic lens, the museum offers visitors a new way to understand one of the world’s most important resources.
